Abstract

In general, women are often exposed to the notion that those who are beautiful and possess physical attractiveness are viewed as more influential, powerful, authoritative, and are often idolized. This notion is reinforced in the media, such as television, print media, and digital platforms, through the appearances of famous figures, actors, models, and celebrities. The internalization of beauty standards from such media not only impacts adult women but also influences young teenagers who feel the pressure to appear attractive. The focus on beauty and physical attractiveness is evident in young adult literature, particularly in the 'teen-lit' genre that has been published in recent years. This paper aims to examine the portrayal of physical attractiveness found in 'teen-lit' novels published after 2010 to see the extent to which authors in this category depict beauty and self-presentation in their works. Three 'teen-lit' novels are analyzed textually to investigate the use of physical attractiveness as a main theme and the interventions by the three authors in detailing aspects of body care and self-presentation. The study finds that all the novels examined are rich in descriptions of physical attractiveness, particularly the appearance and body size of the characters. Two of the analyzed novels show that the protagonists, who initially have weight issues, eventually conform to societal expectations by losing weight. Another novel describes the main character’s compliance to eliminate the 'ugliness' they possess. The authors’ intervention in emphasizing self-presentation is also evident as they include narratives that inform the importance of body care and self-presentation.
