The Influence of Academic Achievement on Students’ Psychological Well-Being

Academic achievement has been widely linked to students’ psychological well-being, yet limited research in the Malaysian context—particularly within public universities—has examined how academic performance interacts with mental health outcomes. Addressing this gap, the present study investigates the relationship between academic achievement and psychological well-being among third-year students of the Faculty of Business and Communication, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). Specifically, the study aims to determine whether variations in academic performance are significantly associated with stress, anxiety, and overall mental health status. A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was employed, using a structured questionnaire adapted from the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and academic performance self-reports. A total of 248 students were selected through stratified random sampling. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation in IBM SPSS. The findings revealed a significant negative correlation between academic achievement and psychological distress (r = –0.41, p < 0.001), indicating that students with lower academic performance experienced higher stress and anxiety levels. Conversely, students with stronger academic performance demonstrated better mental health outcomes. These results highlight the critical need for targeted academic support and structured mental health interventions, such as stress management workshops, academic mentoring programs, and accessible counseling services, to create a more balanced and supportive university environment.
Pencapaian akademik telah lama dikaitkan dengan kesejahteraan psikologi pelajar, namun kajian terhad dalam konteks Malaysia—terutamanya di universiti awam—telah meneliti bagaimana prestasi akademik berinteraksi dengan hasil kesihatan mental. Menangani jurang ini, kajian ini menyiasat hubungan antara pencapaian akademik dan kesejahteraan psikologi dalam kalangan pelajar tahun ketiga Fakulti Perniagaan dan Komunikasi, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). Secara khusus, kajian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan sama ada variasi dalam prestasi akademik mempunyai kaitan yang signifikan dengan tahap stres, kebimbangan, dan status kesihatan mental secara keseluruhan. Reka bentuk kajian tinjauan keratan rentas kuantitatif digunakan, dengan menggunakan soal selidik berstruktur yang diadaptasi daripada Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21) serta laporan kendiri prestasi akademik. Seramai 248 orang pelajar dipilih melalui pensampelan rawak berstrata. Data dianalisis menggunakan korelasi Pearson dalam IBM SPSS.Dapatan kajian menunjukkan wujudnya korelasi negatif yang signifikan antara pencapaian akademik dan tekanan psikologi (r = –0.41, p < 0.001), yang menunjukkan bahawa pelajar dengan prestasi akademik yang lebih rendah mengalami tahap stres dan kebimbangan yang lebih tinggi. Sebaliknya, pelajar yang mempunyai prestasi akademik yang lebih baik menunjukkan hasil kesihatan mental yang lebih baik.Dapatan ini menekankan keperluan kritikal untuk sokongan akademik yang lebih terarah dan intervensi kesihatan mental yang berstruktur, seperti bengkel pengurusan stres, program bimbingan akademik, dan perkhidmatan kaunseling yang mudah diakses, bagi mewujudkan persekitaran universiti yang lebih seimbang dan menyokong.
