Public Awareness and Recycling Practices of Electronic Waste (E-waste): A Case Study of Perlis, Malaysia

Abstract

Electronic waste (e-waste) has become one of the fastest-growing waste streams worldwide due to the rapid advancement of electrical and electronic technologies. In Malaysia, the increasing generation of e-waste poses significant environmental and public health challenges, highlighting the need for effective recycling practices. This study assessed public awareness and recycling practices related to e-waste among residents in Perlis, Malaysia. A quantitative survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire administered to 240 respondents selected through purposive sampling from schools, universities, workplaces, and public locations. The findings indicate that although most respondents were aware of e-waste and recognized the importance of recycling, actual participation in e-waste recycling remained relatively low. Limited knowledge of authorized recycling centers, accessibility issues, and insufficient practical guidance were identified as the main barriers to participation in recycling. Respondents also recommended strengthening public awareness campaigns and expanding e-waste collection facilities to improve recycling practices. The study concludes that increasing awareness alone is insufficient to promote sustainable e-waste management. A comprehensive approach that integrates continuous environmental education, accessible recycling infrastructure, and supportive government policies is essential to encourage responsible recycling behavior. The findings provide practical guidance for policymakers and stakeholders in developing more effective e-waste management strategies and contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
