Abstract

Hydrogen is viewed as one of the most essential energy carriers for the future. There are many uses of hydrogen as a fuel for rockets; as a cooling medium in future clean energy systems; as a chemical feedstock for producing ammonia or methanol; and in healthcare products such as hydrogen-rich water with possible antioxidant and therapeutic properties. This review aims to provide a summary of current hydrogen production technologies and reviews four types of hydrogen production processes: steam methane reforming (SMR), water electrolysis, thermochemical processes, and biological methods. This review summarizes, compares, and analyzes the timeline of developments over the last six years for each of the four hydrogen production processes. This article is intended to researchers in hydrogen production and related fields, especially those working in sustainable energy research.
