Developing smart transportation systems is crucial, particularly in developing countries, to facilitate efficient, timely, and convenient travel. In Malaysia, heavy traffic jams are a significant issue, necessitating the urgent implementation of such systems. Given their integration with train services, this paper proposes developing a smart transportation system focusing on bus networks. Since no such system currently exists in Malaysia, it is essential to benchmark against international implementations. This literature review and bibliometric analysis examine various smart transportation systems globally, emphasizing both the technologies employed and the architecture of their big data systems. The review covers a range of intelligent transportation technologies, including real-time tracking, predictive analytics, and integrated multimodal transport solutions. It also explores the underlying big data infrastructure that supports these systems, highlighting successful case studies and identifying best practices. The insights gained from this comprehensive review will inform the design and implementation of an effective smart transportation system in Malaysia, addressing the pressing issue of traffic congestion and enhancing overall urban mobility.
