In light of the Chinese cultural context, we examined the impact of work stress on work motivation in Chinese physical education, delving into the interplay between self-determination theory, stress-cognitive interaction theory, and communication. The results of the study, which were obtained through a questionnaire survey and data analysis of 301 Chinese physical education coaches, are as follows: (1) Work pressure can effectively predict the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of physical education coaches; (2) Communication can effectively and positively predict the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of physical education coaches; (3) Communication plays an intermediary role in the relationship between work pressure and motivation and can positively influence the relationship between the two, which is important for the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of physical education coaches. The findings of this study elucidate the mechanism through which work pressure affects the motivation of sports coaches, thereby assisting enterprises in innovating and optimising their management and communication systems. The results have both theoretical and practical significance.
