Abstract

As the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry grows so too must sufficient systems for occupational health and safety (OHS). LNG can present a high-risk technical environment; therefore, the objective of this literature review is to synthesise OHS research and practice to address the unique situation for LNG operations. In particular it is focused on ergonomics and human factors engineering (HFE) systems, and maps the regulatory landscape, identifies hazards of concern and reviews human-centred interventions in LNG operations. It acknowledges the importance of considering forward-looking HFE issues including control room design, task analysis, safety of procedures) to reduce human error, and improve the resilience of complex ST systems. It ends with considerations of persistent evidence gaps and recommendations for future HFE research and practice to strengthen considerations of regulatory compliance, as well as human performance optimization, in the pursuit for a safer and more efficient industry.
